Stock market today: Domestic equity benchmarks Nifty50 and Sensex gained on Friday, May 17 amid broad-based buying led by auto and financial stocks. The leaner Sensex index rose 253.31 points, or 0.34 per cent, to settle at 73,917.03 while the 50-share index Nifty closed at 22,466.1, up 62.25 points, or 0.28 per cent.

Mahindra & Mahindra, Grasim, UltraTech Cement, JSW Steel, and BPCL led the gains in the Nifty 50 universe. while Cipla, Tata Consultancy Services, SBI Life, HCL Tech, and Britannia were the top decliners. 

Nifty Bank settled 0.29 per cent higher at 48,115.65. The domestically focussed Nifty SmallCap 100 and Nifty MidCap100 were up 1.65 per cent and 0.88 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, Nifty IT closed 0.85 per cent lower at Rs 33,381.85. 

At close, Nifty Auto jumped 1.74 per cent led by buying gains in M&M, TVS Motor, and eight advancing stocks. 

Mahindra & Mahindra closed at Rs 2,510, up 5.83 per cent after scaling a record high of Rs 2,557.95 during the session after beating the March quarter profit view.
