The 50-scrip index rose 80 points, or 0.36 per cent, to settle at 22,514.65 for the day after hitting an intraday high of 22,619, while the Sensex closed at 74,227.63, up 350.81 points, or 0.47 per cent. The morning surge helped the 30-scrip gauge reach a record of 74,501.73 in intraday trade.

"Market breadth displayed a positive trend within a narrow trading range, with attention focused on the RBI's upcoming monetary policy announcement tomorrow," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.

At close, HDFC Bank, Titan, Tech Mahindra, Eicher Motors, and Asian Paints were among the top gainers, while ONGC, Adani Ports, Shriram Finance, BPCL, and Bharti Airtel were among the top losers. Index heavyweight HDFC Bank closed 3.15 per cent higher, a top Nifty 50 gainer after the private sector lender released its Q4 business update.

The investors now await the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) monetary policy decision due on Friday and the quarterly earnings season, starting next week. The broader, more domestically-focused Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 ended 0.01 per cent and 0.45 per cent higher, respectively.

"Expectations lean towards the likely status quo in the repo rate due to prevalent inflation worries. Meanwhile, the broader market has shown resilience in select sectors like banks in anticipation of decent Q4 results and exports based on composite PMI data reflecting strong business conditions," Nair added.

Investors gained Rs 92,130.64 crore in wealth as the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies rose to Rs 3,98,27,579.16 crore at the end of trade on Thursday from Rs 3,97,35,448.52 crore the previous day, according to provisional exchange data.
