The Sensex, India's benchmark index, closed 522.82 points lower at 64,049.06. Its counterpart, the Nifty, also witnessed a decline, closing 159.60 points down at 19,122.15.
The Nifty index showed a mixed performance with 10 advancing companies and 40 declining ones. Notably, Tata Steel, Coal India, Hindalco, Tata Consumer Products, and State Bank of India (SBI) emerged as the top gainers.

Share Market Today LIVE | HSBC says HUL has been five-year market laggard now, double downgrades stock to 'Hold'
Global brokerage firm HSBC has double-downgraded the stock of FMCG major Hindustan Unilever (HUL) to 'Hold' from 'Buy' and has cut the target price to Rs 2,700 from Rs 2,950 earlier. In its report, the brokerage said that HUL has been a five-year market laggard now, in part due to the unwinding of a significant past re-rating phase. HUL shares trade flat at Rs 2,481.4, down 0.08 per cent on NSE.
HSBC added that HUL's lacklustre Q2 performance hasn’t helped, with areas of weakness persisting in the portfolio, and unless markets turn deeply risk-averse, it sees little upside in the stock. Read more

Shares of Torrent Pharmaceuticals slip by as much as 2.74 per cent after the mid-cap company posted in-line Q2 results. The stock opened the session on a positive note gaining as much as 2 per cent at the opening, only to pare its gains later. Profit after tax at the drug major grew 24 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 386 crore in the September ended quarter.
