Silver hallmarking in the pipeline; durability of HUID on silver under review
The development holds significant importance for ensuring quality assurance in silver products, much like it has for gold. With these technological considerations underway, the introduction of silver hallmarking could soon become a reality.
After the successful implementation of the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) system for gold, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is now considering extending hallmarking to silver articles. However, a key challenge lies in ensuring the durability of HUID markings on silver surfaces.
Experts point out that, unlike gold, silver is more reactive to environmental factors, which may cause the HUID etched on its surface to deteriorate over time. Addressing this, methods to enhance the stability of HUID on silver and make it inert to atmospheric reactions are being actively explored.
