CNG, PNG price cut: Prices of PNG or piped natural gas — used as kitchen fuel — are set to come down, as the Cabinet has announced a new pricing mechanism for the domestically-produced gas. The price of CNG — a greener alternative to non-renewable auto fuels petrol and diesel — is likely to follow suit.

The guidelines, approved by the Union Cabinet, are aimed at ensuring a stable pricing regime for domestic gas consumers while providing adequate protection to producers from adverse market fluctuation with incentives for enhancing production.

How much reduction can you expect in CNG and LNG prices?

While PNG rates are set to ease by 10 per cent, CNG prices are estimated to reduce by 7-9 per cent.

Here's a lowdown on how the bill for piped cooking gas is calculated:

Generally, the bill for a piped cooking gas connection is generated every two months based on the quantity consumed. This quantity is displayed on the meter attached to the connection.

The user pays the bill based on the exact consumption reading provided by the meter installed at the connection site.

The consumer can also opt for self-billing, wherein the consumer provides the status of the consumption by clicking an image of the meter and sending it to the gas provider using an app or website. The bill is generated automatically.

But what happens if you don't opt for self-billing? Well, the company usually sends intimations to the consumer through SMS or email and even sends executives to note the meter reading.

For instance, a customer having used piped natural gas of less than four standard cubic meters (SCM) in a two-month billing cycle is liable to pay minimum charges equivalent to four scm as per the prevailing rate of the PNG. SCM is the volume of gas minimum billing

Difference between CNG and PNG

Currently, PNG, an alternative to LPG, is used as kitchen fuel in many parts of the country. PNG is available to the end consumer at a price lower than LPG.

CNG is used as automobile fuel. It is a greener fuel compared to crude oil-based, non-renewable fuels such as petrol and diesel.
