"For people who've jewellery where HUID hallmarking is not there, those customers don't need to be worried. It's a work in progress. HUID hallmarking has been implemented on a very large scale. Slowly, if we see anything which is lacking, we'll resolve it. Govt decided to make an advisory committee on it permanently which will give suggestions to BIS, " news agency ANI tweted quoting Pramod Kumar Tiwari.

Earlier Jewellers across India went on a strike on August 23 against "arbitrarily" implemented mandatory hallmarking process in the country by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The strike has been called by the National Task Force for Hallmarking, formed by 350 associations and federations representing all four zones of the entire gems and jewellery industry. The objective of this committee is to ensure a smooth implementation of mandatory hallmarking across the country, said a statement by the task force on Friday.

Just ahead of the strike, the BIS has said that HUID-based hallmarking is a win-win situation for everyone and urged the representatives concerned to call of the strike.

"Hallmarking scheme is turning out to be grand success with more than 1 crore pieces of Jewellery hallmarked in a quick time," said Director General BIS, while addressing a press conference on the subject of progress being made in the Hallmarking in India . He said that more than 90000 Jewellers have also registered in same time period.
"I heard that some associations have given a call for strike. Strike for what? ... The government is listening to every issue raised by stakeholders. The idea of strike is uncalled for," the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said in a virtual press conference.

Mandatory gold hallmarking has come into force from June 16 in a phased manner. The government has identified 256 districts from 28 states and union territories for phase-1 implementation.

Gold hallmarking, a purity certification of the precious metal, was voluntary in nature prior to June 16.
