In the closing, the broader Nifty settled with loss of 468.05 or 2.66% lower to 17,149.10 after briefly slipping below 17,000 to 16,997.85. Similarly, the Sensex too slid below crucial 57,000 to 56,984.01, however, the 30-share index recovered in the last minutes and ended at 57,491.51, down 1545.67 or 2.62%.
''Sell off in global markets, weak Q3 results and pre-budget nervousness triggered heavy sell-off in the domestic bourses as risk sentiment took a blow ahead of the FOMC meeting," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Investors are keenly awaiting the result of the two-day Fed meeting where the US Central Bank is expected to provide more guidance on its rate hike plans, he said. "While all sectors hit rough weather, stocks of the new age tech companies were the most affected due to drop in growth of profitability amid expensive valuations," he added.
All major Asian indices continued to trade lower on Tuesday morning as well. Japanese Nikkei 225 declined by 1.77%, Hang Seng Index slipped by 1.41%, Shanghai Composite was trading 0.54% lower and the SGX Nifty Futures were too trading in the red as the index was down 58 points or by 0.34% to 16,999 on Monday.
Meanwhile in view of the FOMC meeting and the prospect of Russian attack on Ukraine, the US markets ended lower for yet another session on Monday. Dow Jones slid 1.3%, Nasdaq Composite declined 2.72%, S&P500 ended lower by 1.89% and Russell 200 dropped 1.78% end in the red.
