The broader Nifty 50 declined 70 points or 0.40% to 17,206.65, while the Sensex dropped 150 points to end at 57,683.59. Banking and financial services gained in a falling market, while all other sectoral and broader market indices ended lower with Nifty Metal and Media declining the most.
Meanwhile, BSE-listed companies witnessed capital erosion of 10.4 lakh crore in the last four sessions. The market cap of BSE-listed companies declined y 2.62 lakh crore, 2.61 lakh crore, 2.60 lakh crore and 2.57 lakh crore on February 16, 17, 18 and 21 respectively.

Meanwhile, Asian indices were deep in the red amid escalating tension between Russia and Ukraine. Japanese Nikkei 225 was down 1.95%, Hang Seng Index at the Hong Kong Exchange was trading 2.25% lower and Shanghai Composite declined 0.26% in the early trade as Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops to two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine after recognising them as independent on Monday, accelerating a crisis the West fears could unleash a major war.
Earlier, oil jumped to a seven-year high, safe-havens rallied and U.S. stock futures dived on Tuesday as Europe`s eastern flank stood on the brink of war after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine, reported Reuters.
Brent crude futures rose 1.6% to $96.94, just off their overnight seven year high. S&P 500 futures fell 1.5% and Nasdaq futures fell 2.2%. Asian stocks were also down over half a percent, while Japan`s Nikkei skidded sharply.
