Nifty hits 18,000: Nifty hit 18000 mark on Monday, its first since 13 September, as domestic markets continued their winning streak for the eight successive session. The 50-share index settled at 18,012.20, higher by 225.40 points or 1.27 per cent with active participation of all sectors.

Led by IT and auto stocks, Nifty50 traded with authority for most part of the session after opening cautiously. The momentum only picked up as the session progressed. Nifty IT and Nifty Auto ended up 1.45 per cent from the last closing on Friday. Nifty Financial Services was another major contributor to the overall rally in NSE stocks.

In terms of volumes, 22,71,74,539 shares traded on Nifty today.  It will look to test its 52-week highs of 18,350.95 when markets reopen tomorrow.

Here are key highlights from the day's trade: 

1) Nifty50 surpassed 18000 mark for the first time in 48 days. 

2) All 15 Sectoral indices closed on a positive note. Nifty Auto (up 1.45 per cent), Nifty Financial Services (up 1.39 per cent) and Nifty Consumer Durables (up 1.48 per cent) as clear winners.

3) NIFTY MIDCAP 100 settled at 31,432.30, tracking great action of the benchmarks to end close 1.38 per cent.

4)  The markets opened cautiously and picked up momentum as the session proceeded. Global cues and buying interest among investors catapulted the markets.

5) Volatility Index was down by 15.80, down 0.75 per cent from the Friday closing levels.

Meanwhile, BSE Sensex closed at 60,746.59, gaining almost 786.74 points or 1.31 per cent. In the 30-stock index, 27 stocks were trading in the green at the closing time while three were in the red. The gainers were Ultratech Cement Company, HDFC and Sun Pharma. The losers were NTPC, Dr Reddy's and Indusind Bank.

On BSE, 147 stocks hit their 52-week highs while 61 stocks hit their 52-week lows. Number of stocks that hit their upper circuits were 267 against 216 which hit their 52-week lows.
