Domestic equity markets ended positively on Wednesday, though with only minor gains ahead of the monthly expiry of November series. BSE Sensex closed at 61,510.58, up 91.62 points or 0.15 per cent after hitting intraday high of 61,780.90. Meanwhile, Nifty50 settled at 18,267.25, up 23 points or 0.13 per cent. The 50-stock index hit highs of 18,325.40.

However, Bank Nifty was the star performer for today as the banking index hit a lifetime high of 42860 on the intraday basis before closing with a 220-point lead at 42,680.90. Bank Nifty moved in a 300-point range. 

At 14.04, India VIX, a measure of volatility in Nifty ended up 1.44 per cent from the Tuesday closing level.

The top gainers on Nifty50 were Apollo Hospitals, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life, JSW Steel and SBI while top losers were Adani Enterprises, Power Grid, Hero MotoCorp, Tech Mahindra and Adani Ports. 24 stocks gained, 25 declined while one remained unchanged. 

Of the 15 Nifty sectoral indices, 12 ended positively against 3 losers. The top gainers were Nifty Media (+1.14 per cent) Nifty PSU Bank (+1.02 per cent) and Nifty PSU Bank (+0.64 per cent). Nifty IT and Nifty Metal were top losers.

There was stock specific action in broader markets with Nifty Mid Cap 100 closing at 31,150.65, up 0.26 per cent. Nifty Small Cap 100 settled at 9,691.30, higher by 0.54 per cent.

Inox Green Energy Serivices IPO listed at a discount on Wednesday. The stock ended at Rs 59.25 on the NSE, down Rs 5.75 or 8.85 per cent from the issue price.

The rupee depreciated 18 paise to close at 81.85 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday on dollar demand from importers and recovery in crude oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 81.81 and later witnessed an intraday high of 81.74 and a low of 81.87 during the session. The domestic unit finally settled at 81.85 against the American currency, registering a fall of 18 paise over its last close of 81.67. PTI
