Closing Bell: Nifty ends near 17,100, Sensex slips over 450 points; energy, media stocks top laggards

The Indian market erased all gains made in the morning and early afternoon sessions to settle in the red on Friday. Benchmarks Nifty 50 and the Sensex dropped more than half per cent each, as profit booking hit the market on last trading day of the week. Energy, bank, auto and IT stocks dragged the market the most as Nifty ended near 17,100-mark and the Sensex lower by more than 400 points.
Following benchmark indices, Nifty midcap and small cap too corrected around 1% each as India Volatility Index (VIX) approached 20-mark.
Sector-wise, all Nifty indices were deep in red with energy, media, banking and auto taking the maximum hit on Friday.
Axis Bank remained top losers on the benchmarks with over 6% loss. Coal India, Adani Ports, Power Grids, Bajaj Auto, Wipro, Maruti, State Bank, NTPC were other top laggards.
Among stocks, HDFC Life, Tata Consumer, Kotak Bank, Sun Pharma, HDFC Bank, Dr Reddy's and Tata Steel were among few gainers in a highly volatile market.
