Nifty December futures closed at a premium of 16.75 points versus a premium of 17.10 points. The market added Rs 34131 cr in open interest, taking the total open interest in the F&O segment to Rs. 571032 cr. The Nifty call option shed 0.44 lakh shares in open interest and the put option added 118.21 lakh shares in open interest. PNB (113%) ASHOKLEY (22%), MFSL (17%), IBULHSGFIN (15%) and POWERGRID (13%) were the top gainers in terms of open interest. CANBK (-12), MINDTREE (-9%), IGL (-8%) and BERGERPAINT (-7%) and ICICI General Insurance (-7%) were the top losers in terms of open interest. Overall futures & options volumes currently stand at 301.10 lakh contracts, with a turnover of Rs 2587753 cr. Volumes in the F&O segment were higher as compared to the previous trading session.

Market commentary:

The Nifty opened on a higher note in line with positive cues from global markets on December 16, 2020. It traded in the range of 30-40 points for the rest of the day, waiting for some triggers. The Nifty Auto, Metal and Realty indices ended in the green. Stocks like HINDALCO, BHARTIARTL, HDFC, DIVISLAB and ONGC were top gainers that rose by 2-3%, while stocks like ICICI BANK, INDUSINDBK, ULTRACEMCO, GAIL and NTPC were top losers that fell by 0.5-1%. The Nifty closed at around 13696 levels with a gain of 0.82%.

About 9.88 lakh shares were added in open interest with an increase in prices this indicates that long build-up was observed by market participants. On the options front, the volatility index decreased by 0.78%.
