This time while presenting the interim state budget, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recommended an increase in salary for the para teachers of the state. She informed that the para teachers will enjoy an increase of 3% in their pay per year.

Also, the para teachers will receive an ex-gratia amount of Rs 3 lakh at the time of their retirement. The Chief Minister further announced that 1500 para teachers will be recruited for teaching the Alchiki script. She also allotted Rs 50 crore for the madrasas.

A fixed salary structure was a long-time demand for the para teachers of West Bengal.  They were protesting about this for quite some time.

Despite approaching the state government time and again on this matter, no decision was reached related to this.

From January 18, the para teachers started showing demonstrations close to Bikash Bhavan. On February 5, they called for a Nabanna Abhijan to highlight their issue. During this march, the para teachers were faced with severe police confrontations.
Incidentally, on the same day, the Chief Minister made the above-mentioned recommendations for the para teachers while presenting the interim state budget.
