IRCTC Train ticket cancellation charges and rules: If you have booked your train tickets, but can't undertake the journey, you must know cancellation rules and how much you would be charged for cancelling your tickets.  These charges vary from class-to-class and depending on how early you cancel your ticket before departure of the train concerned. The railways also deduct additional cost as freight charges.

Sleeper class waiting and RAC cancellation charge

If you have booked your tickets in sleeper class and your ticket status is either unconfirmed or RAC, you can cancel your ticket 30 minutes prior of the train departure. For these tickets, railways charges Rs 60 cancellation charge per passenger. However, a passenger will not be refunded amount in case ticket is cancelled if you do maintain that time period. Railways will charge Rs 30 for unreserved tickets in such cases.  

Cancellation charge on confirmed ticket before 48 hours  
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train, flat cancellation charges shall be deducted at Rs 240 for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs 200 for AC 2 Tier/First Class, Rs 180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair car/ AC 3 Economy, Rs 120 for Sleeper Class and Rs 60 for Second Class. Cancellation charges are per passenger.  

Charges before 12 hours of train departure  
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled within 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges shall be 25% of the fare subject to the minimum flat rate mentioned in the above clause.    

Train ticket cancellation charges in less than 12 hours and before 4 hours  
Less than 12 hours and up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train up to chart preparation, which is earlier, 50% of the fare paid subject to the minimum cancellation charges.
