IRCTC train ticket booking: How to change passenger's names in train e-tickets
IRCTC train ticket booking process has become very simple and travellers will find all the solutions online, but for some complicated stuff, an offline method has been implemented. This includes a solution for those who have booked a train ticket and want to know if a passenger's name in the e-ticket can be changed or not. Well, as per Indian Railways norms, Chief Reservation Supervisors of important stations are authorised by the railway administration to permit the change of name of a passenger having a seat or berth reserved in his name in case of certain situations. To avail this facility, passengers have to approach their nearest railway reservation office with the printout of e-reservation slip and original photo ID of one of the passengers travelling. Notably, the name of a passenger can be changed up to 24 hours prior to scheduled departure of the train.
1. Passenger is a government servant:
If the passenger is a government servant heading on duty and appropriate authority and s/he provides in writing the intention to change 24 hours prior to scheduled departure of train. (PTI)
2. Passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours
If a passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure, then the reservation under his/her name can be changed or swapped with the name of another member of his family. (PTI)

If the passengers are students of a recognised educational institution and the head of that institution writes a request 48 hours before the scheduled departure. (Reuters)

5. Passengers are a group of cadets of NCC:
