Other crucial issues in this space have also come up, making authorities sit up and pay notice. The first thing that has made the most impact was the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, clearing a salary hike for certain postal department employees who had been on a strike for days. The Gramin Dak Sevaks had been asking for ending of pay anomalies that had crept in after the implementation of the 7th pay commission on the Postal Department, but which was not applied to them Considering they are not really full fledged government servants. This left the anomalies in their pay versus those of the other department employees. The strike was very successful simply because their salaries were hiked by a big margin by the Centre. The changes mean the basic pay of Gramin Dak Sevaks has been hiked by over 3 times up to Rs 14,500. The minimum wage of Gramin Dak Sevaks has been increased to Rs 10,000 per month and maximum to Rs 35,480 per month. Image source: PTI

Clearance given to 7th pay commission implementation for central government employees has given RBI big problems. RBI is an inflation fighter and it has seen the 7th CPC linked HRA boosting prices and it is having to tackle the situation to ensure price rise stays within controllable limits. Even during the RBI monetary review meet, the central bank takes account of the impact on CPI inflation. With the same rising, this time RBI went to the extent of hiking repo rate by 25 bps in an effort to contain it. Of course, this is not the only thing that is taken into account. And what are the other reasons? RBI sees CPI inflation rising due to soaring crude prices, weakening of Indian rupee, MSP hikes and 7th Pay Commission. Image source: PTI
