What is mostly not known though, is that it is also earning a lot of money, in foreign exchange at that! According to the government, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has earned Rs 1,245.17 crore during the last five years by launching satellites from 26 countries.
The financial year 2018-19 saw a handsome Rs 91.63 crore spike in India's foreign exchange earnings from launching of foreign satellites.
Launch income goes up!
During the fiscal 2018-19, the launch income was Rs 324.19 crore up from Rs 232.56 crore earned in 2017-18.
In a reply to a question raised in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Atomic Energy and Space Jitendra Singh gave the data on Thursday.
According to ISRO Chairman K. Sivan, Indian rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has lifted a total of 52.7 ton till date and out of that 17 per cent consists of customer satellites.
Moreover, contracts with 10 countries namely the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Singapore, The Netherlands, Japan, Malaysia, Algeria and France were signed in the last five years under commercial arrangements.
India on Wednesday had successfully placed into orbit its latest radar imaging earth observation satellite RISAT-2BR1 and nine foreign satellites from four countries using its PSLV rocket.
In the process, India touched 319 foreign satellite launch mark ever since 1999. Declaring this will be the last rocket mission of ISRO for 2019, its chief K. Sivan said in 2020, there will be the maiden launch mission of new rocket Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) and other rockets.
India's latest radar imaging earth observation satellite RISAT-2BR1 now is up in the sky, will send sharp images for surveillance, agriculture, forestry and disaster management.
The satellite camera can even look through the clouds and take pictures.
The Indian space agency officials said they would supply the required images for various agencies. It is for the user agency to decide on the image use.
More good news is on the way! ISRO will be launching one more satellite like the RISAT-2BR2 soon.
