Whopping Rs 86,500 penalty under Motor Vehicle Act slapped on this truck driver! Check break-up
Believe it or not, a truck driver in Odisha has been fined a whopping Rs 86,500 by the Regional Transport Officer in Sambalpur under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. The driver was reportedly driving a vehicle with Nagaland registration number. This is the highest penalty levied under the new Motor Vehicles Act.
Believe it or not, a truck driver in Odisha has been fined a whopping Rs 86,500 by the Regional Transport Officer in Sambalpur under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. The driver was reportedly driving a vehicle with Nagaland registration number. This is the highest penalty levied under the new Motor Vehicles Act. The incident reportedly took place on September 3 when the driver was caught with a vehicle having Nagaland registration number. Also, he was driving the truck without a valid license and was carrying overload goods.
The truck was eventually released by the local traffic police after the driver paid a penalty of Rs 70,000 along with producing some documents.
"The driver was penalised with a total Rs 86,500 including Rs 500 for general offence, Rs 5000 for allowing unauthorised persons to drive vehicle, Rs 5000 for driving without valid driving licence, Rs 56,000 for carrying overload goods (total 42 tonnes, which was extra 18 tonnes from allowed wait) and Rs 20,000 for carrying over-dimension load," a press release from the transport department read.
The truck was on the way to Chhattisgarh from Talcher of Anugul District when it was inquired in Sambalpur.

Notably, Odisha had implemented the amended MV act from September 1 itself and has collected the highest penalty in the country - over Rs 88 lakh since then. Last week, an auto-rickshaw driver in Bhubaneswar was fined Rs 47,500 for driving his vehicle without a valid driving licence, registration certification, insurance certificate as well as for drunken driving.
The situation is no different in other parts of the country. A truck driver was recently issued a challan of Rs 59,000 by Gurugram police for multiple traffic offences. The list which swelled to 10 violations includes offences such a driving without a licence, without vehicle registration, disobeying traffic signal among others.
Before that, an auto driver was issued a challan of Rs 32,500 in the same city.
