Weather Updates: Heatwave to prevail in parts of MP, Andhra, West Bengal; heavy rainfall alerts in central and eastern India
“Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail today in pockets of Vidharbha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, tomorrow in pockets of Gangetic West Bengal and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and in pockets of Odisha from 15th to 17th May. These conditions will abate thereafter,” IMD said in its recent tweet.
Weather is likely to change in many parts of the country, especially in Madhya Pradesh due to Western Disturbance, while heat waves are expected to continue in parts of Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 16. IMD has also issued a yellow alert for many parts of Madhya Pradesh including Anuppur, Jabalpur, Shahdol, Mandla, Dindori, and Balaghat as these regions are likely to receive rain with thunder and lightning.
The temperature in Delhi recorded 41.3°C on Monday, surpassing the usual average for this period by two degrees, according to the IMD. The IMD has forecasted light rainfall on Tuesday which might bring a very brief respite from the scorching heat.
IMD cautioned that parts of Madhya Pradesh including Guna, Sheopur Kalan, Mandsaur, Narsingpur, Chhatarpur, Sagar, and Jabalpur are likely to receive moderate rainfall as well. Some regions of MP like Bhind, Morena, Datia, Sehore, Katni, Harda, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Damoh, and Betul, may also get rain with thunder. However, in other parts of the state, the torture of scorching heat will continue in Madhya Pradesh. The maximum temperature dropped by 2-3°C due to rain, however, the highest maximum temperature of 44.5°C was recorded in Tikamgarh.
The temperature will be around 41.1°C in Bhopal, 39.4°C in Indore, 41.8°C in Gwalior and Jabalpur.

The tourism industry has also felt the heat due to soaring mercury. There has been a decrease in the number of tourists in Sanchi, a World Heritage Site located in Raisen district.The maximum temperature in Raisen has crossed 42°C. “Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail today in pockets of Vidharbha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, tomorrow in pockets of Gangetic West Bengal and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and in pockets of Odisha from 15th to 17th May. These conditions will abate thereafter,” IMD said in its recent tweet. IMD has suggested that individuals should avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight, light-colored, loose, cotton clothes, cover heads, and use a cloth, hat, or umbrella. It has been also advised to drink sufficient water- even if not thirsty, use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc. to keep hydrated. Heavy rainfall is likely today and tomorrow in some places over the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, added IMD. East Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 16, 18, and 19.

Weather forecaster Skymet has said that the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala could be delayed this year and the month of June can see prolonged hot weather. The southwest monsoon starts its journey into the Indian subcontinent from the Kerala coast typically around June 1.
