Weather update today: Delhi-NCR wakes up to another foggy morning, region reels under 'severe' cold; IMD issues alert for other states

Weather update today: There was no respite to the People in Delhi-NCR even on Friday as they woke up to another foggy morning. A thick layer of fog engulfed parts of the national capital, reducing the visibility on streets.  

Parts of Delhi reeled under a “severe” cold wave and “dense” fog on Thursday too as the minimum temperature dropped to 1.8 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Meanwhile, issuing an alert for other states, IMD posted on Twitter, “Dense/Very dense fog has been reported from north Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam and Tripura at 0530 IST of today, the 15th January. @ndmaindia.”  

In another tweet, it also said, “Visibility (0530 IST): Ganganagar, Patiala, Ambala, Bareilly, Bahraich, Lucknow, Gorakhpur & Baghdogra- 25 m; Amritsar, Chandigarh, Agra, Sultanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna, Bhagalpur & Tezpur- 50 m; Chandigarh, Hissar, Delhi (Sfd & Palam), Gaya, Dibrugarh & Kailashahar-200.”

According to the IMD, “very dense” fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres. In case of “dense” fog, visibility is between 51 and 200 metres, “moderate” 201 and 500 metres, and “shallow” 501 and 1,000 metres.  

The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for the city, recorded a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal, as against 3.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The maximum temperature settled at 19.2 degrees Celsius.  

The weather stations at Jafarpur, Lodhi Road and Ridge recorded a minimum of 1.8 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees Celsius and 3.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
