India gets some respite from heatwave, thanks to Western disturbance; these regions likely to receive moderate rainfall
According to the India Meteorological Department, no heat wave conditions are likely over most parts of the country during the next 4-5 days.
Mild to moderate rain and winds are expected in North Delhi, North-East Delhi, North-West Delhi, West Delhi, Central Delhi, and the National Capital Region, according to a recent report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Kharkhoda (Haryana), Sonipat, Rohtak, Bagpat, Khekra, Modinagar, and Pilakhua are among the adjacent places anticipated to get severe rains.
According to the met department, no heat wave conditions are likely over most parts of the country during the next 4-5 days.
Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed Maharashtra's Thane and neighbouring Palghar districts overnight and authorities issued a 'red alert' for Palghar on Thursday morning, predicting very heavy showers, officials said.
However, IMD predicted that many parts of Uttar Pradesh may witness an extreme heatwave on Thursday, June 23.

Similarly, the weather office also forecased heatwave conditions in few parts of West Uttar Pradesh from 20-23 June 2024."

In a social media post on X, IMD wrote that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to continue over sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Assam-Meghalaya during the next two days and isolated heavy rainfall thereafter.

The IMD predicts that the country's average June rainfall would be less than 92 per cent of the long period average (LPA). The LPA of June rainfall from 1971 to 2020 is 16.69 cm.
Rainfall update in several parts of the country
Mumbai rains
If you're in Mumbai and want to go out in the next 24 hours, brace yourself for rain, as the IMD has issued a "yellow" alert for the city. As a result, moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast during the next 24 hours. It has been raining in Mumbai since last night. The Santacruz observatory reported 20 mm of rain in 24 hours, whereas the Colaba observatory recorded 55 mm the previous day.
Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra
On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) projected "very heavy" rainfall over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra over the next five days.
Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar
According to the weather service, the southwest monsoon has spread to further portions of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the Bay of Bengal, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh
Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected over Uttarakhand on June 23-24 and in East Uttar Pradesh on June 24.
Madhya Pradesh
The meteorological office on Thursday predicted rainfall and strong wind in some parts of Madhya Pradesh for the next two days. The MeT office also stated there is a possibility of strong wind with a speed of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour at some places in southern and south-eastern Madhya Pradesh.
Heatwave alerts
However, heatwave temperatures in portions of West Uttar Pradesh may persist until June 23, after which they will subside.
“A little heatwave has been recorded today too in western Himalayan region, northeast India but it has largely passed. Northwest India was under the impact of western disturbance, but it is likely to move from there from tomorrow,” IMD scientist Soma Sen told news agency ANI.
Therefore, she said, the temperatures are likely to rise from the day after tomorrow.
"We don't expect it to be a heatwave situation with a rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius but west UP will continue to face heatwave situation for 5 days...We are not issuing any heatwave warning for Punjab and Haryana. We will keep monitoring it..." Sen said.
Western disturbance over Jammu-Kashmir
Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan today due to a Western Disturbance over Jammu-Kashmir and its surroundings in lower and middle tropospheric levels, as well as an induced cyclonic circulation over north Haryana.
