India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Delhi till Saturday, May 25 as heatwaves continue to hit many places in North India including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab among other places.

According to IMD, Rajasthan's Barmer recorded its highest temperature at 48 degrees on Wednesday, May 22. This was followed by Sirsa in Haryana which recorded 47.7 degrees and Bhatinda in Punjab hit 46.6 degrees.

IMD issues red alerts

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of severe heatwave in many parts of Rajasthan, parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh and in isolated parts of Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Talking about the temperature of Delhi, the maximum temperature recorded here on May 22 was 43.4 degrees. The maximum temperature is expected to be 44 degrees on 23rd May and 45 degrees on 24th May. Whereas from May 25 to May 28 the temperature will be 46 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature will be 30 degrees to 31 degrees.

According to weather scientists, the temperatures dropped due to easterly winds. "The city saw easterly winds. "The city saw easterly winds on Tuesday. Easterly winds are generally cooler, as in the eastern part of the country temperatures are generally lower than the north-west.... This is a temporary relief and the temperature will begin to rise from Wednesday onwards," RK Jenamani, senior weather scientist at India Meteorological Department, said.
