Weather alert in India: IMD issues second pre-monsoon forecast, check details here
South-west monsoon is moving further and it is expected to reach Kerala by June 1, said IMD. Moreover, in five days, monsoon will cover the areas of Pondicherry, and Tamil Nadu too.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) released the second weather forecast report on Monday, May 27.
"South-west monsoon is moving further and it is expected to reach Kerala by June 1, said IMD. Moreover, in five days, monsoon will cover the areas of Pondicherry, and Tamil Nadu too," predicted IMD.
Monsoon in Kerala
According to IMD, conditions are predicted to improve for the start of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala during the next five days.
The meteorological agency predicts that the southwest monsoon will approach Kerala on May 31, a day earlier than the customary date of June 1.
Kerala is now receiving pre-monsoon rainfall.
As the monsoon moves northward, it provides respite from searing summer temperatures in the areas it typically covers.
Relief from heatwave after three days
IMD said on Monday that a fresh western disturbance is expected to provide relief from the sweltering heat in the northwest and central areas of the nation after three days.
According to IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Rajasthan and Gujarat saw nine to 12 heat wave days, with temperatures reaching 45-50 degrees Celsius.
"Expect relief from the heat wave in northwest and central parts of the country after three days due to a western disturbance and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea. There could be some thunderstorm activity in northwest India and rain in the western Himalayan region," Mohapatra said in a virtual press conference.
Delhi, south Haryana, southwest UP and Punjab recorded five-seven heatwave days, with maximum temperatures ranging from 44 degrees Celsius to 48 degrees Celsius, he said.
Assam also experienced a heat wave with record breaking temperatures on May 25-26.
The IMD blamed the heatwave across northwest India and certain parts of the central area in the second half of May on a lack of rainfall, greater dry and warm winds, and an anti-cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and neighbouring Gujarat.
Mohapatra stated that just two of the five western disturbances that struck north India were active.
Meanwhile, higher number of heatwave days likely in northwest India, adjoining parts of central region in June, said IMD.
