Weather alert: Monsoon onset in next 2-3 days, IMD predicts rainfall in Delhi - NCR, Mumbai
IMD has forecast light to moderate-intensity rain and gusty winds over most places of Delhi and its adjoining areas.
Weather alert: Pre-monsoon rains have already started over Kerala, interior Tamil Nadu, and South Karnataka. Rain activities over Kerala may intensify further marking the onset of monsoon in the next 2 to 3 days. However, it will not have a thumping start over Kerala. The reason being a low-pressure area is likely to form over Southeast Arabian Sea around June 6 or 7. This low-pressure area will move in North Northwest direction and will gradually intensify into a depression.
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has advanced to some parts of Lakshadweep and the South Arabian Sea. IMD, in an alert on Sunday, said "Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds very likely at isolated places over Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala and Mahe, with lighting at isolated places over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Karnataka."
It may be noted that the IMD had predicted heavy rain in Kerala from June 6.
Delhi weather alert
IMD has forecast light to moderate-intensity rain and gusty winds over most places of Delhi and its adjoining areas. "Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speed of 30-50 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of most places of Delhi (Safdarjung, Lodi Road, IGI Airport, Ayanagar), NCR (Loni Dehat, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh) Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Charkhi Dadri, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Kosali, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh, Aurangabad (Haryana)", IMD informed in a statement.
The agency added that some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will also receive moderate-intensity rain on Sunday. Delhi had recorded its coolest May in 36 years with excess rainfall bringing the average maximum temperature down to 36.8 degrees Celsius this time, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Mumbai weather alert
The IMD said that the city would witness partly cloudy skies on Monday. However, rain or thundershowers could occur towards the evening or night on June 5, and 6. The weather agency said maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34°C & 28°C.
