WATCH: How soaring temperatures impact inflation
Inflation and Summer months are corelated.
According to a report done by Zee Business, agriculture experts say that inflation typically increases during the Summer.
In April, both wholesale inflation and retail inflation rose to 0.34% and 5.39%, respectively, mainly driven by higher food cost. An early summer heat wave led to an increase of 3.8% in month-on-month prices for staple vegetables, according to an earlier report in ZeeBiz.
There are three primary reasons why this happens.
1) Productivity of farm labourers goes down during intense heat
2) Vegetables lose their moisture easily during high temperatures, leading to a "shrinkage loss"
3) Even efficiency in market distribution of produce is affected because of the heat.
All these three reasons will lead to a rise in price, which will eventually be borne by the end-consumers, adding to inclation.
With June only about ten days away, government and private weather forecast agencies are saying that India is set for a good monsoon this year.
But experts say that global warming will only intensify the heat waves in the coming years.
Watch how summer turns up the heat on the vegetables prices.
Inflation will continue to hit as prices of onions and tomatoes are seen to increase by Rupees 5.
