Be it any service - bank account opening, applying for debit card or credit card, availing loans, or opting for savings account, current account, fixed deposits, recurring deposits, etc, you will have to furnish your Permanent Account Number (PAN) to the bank. PAN is a ten-digit alphanumeric number which is issued by Income Tax department. The PAN card is issued in a laminated format, which has information like date of birth, name, age and 10-digit number. However, if you are an State Bank of India (SBI) customer and have not linked your PAN card with bank account for any reason, then do not worry your lender does offer you easiest medium to complete this procedure.

Here’s how you can link your PAN card with SBI bank account via SBI Online -

Step 1 - Log into www.onlinesbi.com

Step 2 - Navigate to ”Profile-PAN Registration“ under "My Accounts", appearing on the left panel of the screen.

Step 3 - On the next page, select the Account number, input the PAN number and click on Submit.

Step 4 - Your request will be forwarded to branch for processing

Step 5 - Branch will process your request in 7 days.

Step 6 - Status of mapping will be advised to you on your registered mobile number.

If you are not yet registered for Internet Banking, you can do so online using your ATM cum Debit Card details. 

Here is how to link your PAN card with SBI account via branch:

Step 1 - Visit your nearest SBI Branch.

Step 2 - Carry a copy of your PAN Card.

Step 3 - Fill in a Letter of Request.

Step 4 - Submit the above with the Xerox copy of PAN Card. 

Step 5 - After necessary verification, the linking will be done  by the branch. 

Step 6 - You will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number regarding the status of linking. 

One of the major reasons for linking PAN card with bank account is that, the Income Tax department refunds amount after scanning your ITR filing, into your bank account of taxpayers. Beginning March 2019, the department firmly stated that, tax refund will be made only in bank accounts which are linked with PAN card. Hence, you must ensure your bank account has your accurate PAN number.
