Delhi Metro is the most popular mode of travel for Delhiites. However, passengers have been known to do the wrong thing while travelling in the trains. If you are making the same mistake, you need to fix that or face consequences! A massive fine worth nearly Rs 90 lakh was collected from travellers in Delhi metro from June 2017 to May 2018 for offences like sitting on the floor of trains, littering, creating a nuisance, travelling with undervalued tokens and obstructing officials on duty, reported a news agency.

Citing an RTI reply, PTI reported that Rs 38 lakh has been collected from people sitting on the floor by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, adding that at least 19,026 people were fined for this offence, which attracts a fine of Rs 200. However, one passenger travelling on the roof had to pay Rs 50.

The most amount of money — Rs 39,20,220 — was collected from people on the Yellow Line, which connects Samaypur Badli and Huda City Centre, said the report.

When PTI sought the opinion of travellers in this regard, some commuters agree that passengers should be disallowed from sitting on the floor, while others disagreed. One Dipika Bhatia, who commutes one and a half hours of the Blue Line every day, told PTI, “I just don’t have the strength to stand after a long day at work.”

Another commuter Saranya Kumar, reportedly said, “There are seats. If people are feeling unwell, they can ask people to get up. I have seen that most people vacate seats if you have a genuine reason,” adding that "it gets very difficult to accommodate people during rush hours when people are sitting on the floor of the train.”
