Top 10 Philanthropists in India: The number of people becoming millionaires is increasing every day across the country. In the Income-tax Assessment Year 2017-18, as many as 61 individuals declared an annual income of over Rs 100 crore. As the wealth of people rise, one wonders as to what all they do with too much money at their disposal. Well, rich people splurging on luxury is no news today. What may surprise many is the fact that many of the millionaires take to philanthropy. Even the richest persons of the country are not far behind.

"Hurun Indian Philanthropy List 2018” prepared by the Hurun Research Institute says that as many as 39 Indians donated Rs 10 Crore or more from 1st October 2017 to 30th September 2018. This number is up by 12 from the last year. 

India's richest person - Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani - donated whopping Rs 437 crore in the same period, while Ajay Piramal of Piramal Group trails him with Rs 200 crore donation. 

In the list of top 10 philanthropists, Manju D Gupta & family is the only woman philanthropist.

Ambani's donations have gone towards education, rural development and healthcare. Piramal has also donated towards education and healthcare. 

Education received 30% donations, healthcare 1%. The research pegs Indian philanthropy at Rs 1,560 crore this year, with an average donation per philanthropist being Rs 40 Crores. Twenty-two self-made and 17 inherited entrepreneurs have fund place in the Hurun India Philanthropy List 2018. 

Releasing the report, Anas Rahman Junaid, Managing Director and Chief Researcher, Hurun Report India, said “The philanthropic landscape of India is changing and evolving because of the active participation and contribution of the top Indian entrepreneurs. Some of the most amazing global wealth creation stories of this century will be from India. Consequently, in the next 5-10 years, I expect to see an exponential increase in active philanthropy emanating from India.”
