Kamal Haasan, the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam, launched a mobile application named ‘Maiam Whistle’ for his party cadres on Monday. The app will help cadres to flag various issues ranging from civic problems to corruption.
The actor-turned-politician said that the ‘Maiam Whistle App’ would be available online from Tuesday when he and his party cadres would visit villages to attend, if not witness, the gram sabha meetings marking the 25th year anniversary of the panchayat being given constitutional status.
He would be visiting the Adigathur village in Tiruvallur district, which was adopted by his party.
“This app is a tool where the individual blows the whistle on issues like environmental pollution, crimes and corruption,” he told reporters at the launch of the app.

However, Haasan also cautioned that the app would not be an alternative to the police or government. He said that the MNM will act like an “agency” which will monitor whether persistent problems are addressed by those concerned.
According to MNM, when a citizen reports an issue with a video or a photographic evidence, a designated ‘Champion’ (volunteer) visits the location and either approves or dismisses it. “Each issue flagged by the citizen should be verified by three champions after which the Admin of the app approves the report based on the details that the Champions give. Once the admin approves the issue, all users will be able to view the issue,” it said. The identity of the citizen would be protected and it would not be revealed to anyone, it said. Multiple verification processes in the app will also prevent people from filing a fake complaint, Haasan assured.
