This Indian teacher bags $1 mn award! Promptly donates half of Rs 7 crore prize money

This teacher, Ranjit Singh Disale, has done India proud on the global stage by winning a coveted award from a reputed institution. However, that is not where the story stopped. In fact, he started multiple stories by his magnificent gesture! He announced that he would donate half of the $1 mn award that he won to other 9 contestants too! Maharashtra Teacher Ranjit Singh Disale said that half of the amount should be distributed among other teacher participants as soon as the reward was announced. The award, when converted to Indian rupees comes to a whopping Rs 7 crore. 

This teacher serving in rural Maharashtra received the Global Teacher Prize because of his efforts to promote girl’s education in a primary school in the country and to connect it with technology. The 32-year-old Ranjit Singh Disale got a prize of 1 million dollars (about 7 cr 38 lakh rupees). Disale has announced to give half of this amount to his colleagues.

Schools are completely closed during the Corona pandemic. Digital learning is happening in schools but they are not enough for the students to guide them appropriately. Girls are most affected and are going backwards as they rarely get a chance to use mobiles. At the same time, this teacher through his magnificent work managed to promote girls' education.

The story begins from Paritevadi village in Solapur District of Maharashtra. In the year 2009, when Disale reached the primary school in the village, the condition of the school was not at all good. The building named after the school was in bad shape. It looked as if that place was kept to keep animals and to be used as a store room. People were not interested in teaching their children and providing them with good quality education, especially girls, because villagers believed that eventually nothing could change their future.

Disale took up the challenge of changing the situation. It was an extremely difficult task to go from one house to another house and explaining parents that it is important to educate their children. Since most of the books were in English, this was another bigger problem. Disale then not only translated each and every book into their mother tongue but also added technology to it. This technique was to give QR codes so that the students could attend the video lecture and listen to the poems and stories in their own language. Another major impact of this was that the rate of child marriage in the village and surrounding areas declined sharply.

This teacher from Solapur took the initiative to introduce QR codes in books in Maharashtra. After this, Disale didn’t stop, in the year 2017 he proposed to Maharashtra Government that the entire syllabus should be added to this QR codes pattern which makes the education simpler for the students. After this, initially at the experimental level, QR code pattern was being tested and later on the State Government announced that it would start QR Code textbooks in the state for all categories. Now NCERT has also announced this.

The QR code system gave a lot of fame to Disale, let’s try to know a little bit more about it. Quick Response Code is the full form of QR Code. This is being called the Next Generation of Barcodes, as information is safe here. According to the name, it works for fast scanning. These codes are squared shaped, which contains all the information. A product, whether it is books or newspapers or websites, all have a QR code.

Disale received the award of the world's most amazing teacher for his efforts that he had put in a village of Solapur which is drought hit and in an extremely bad situation. The award was launched by Warke Foundation with an aim to reward exceptional teachers with their outstanding contributions. This year, an entry of 12000 teachers from the entire world came for recognition.
