Indian Railways is trying out an innovative technique to speed up its trains and ensure passengers get to their destination on time. Western Railways is all set to hold a trial run of Rajdhani Express Bandra Terminus-Delhi Hazrat Nizamuddin station with a double engine train. This is for the first time that Indian Railways will run a passenger train with an engine in the front and another engine at the back. Before this Indian Railways had successfully tried this technique out with goods trains. This special Rajdhani Express will save two hours time as compared to the current one, reports Times of India.

The decision to carry out the trial with "push and pull" technique was taken at an Indian Railways committee meeting convened by Central Railway general manager D K Sharma. "Though the engine will be attached to the rear, its operations will be carried by the loco pilot in the front locomotive. We need a technical upgrade for perfect synchronisation between the locomotives for speed and braking," Western Railway chief public relations officer Raviner Bhakar told TOI.

"Also, braking will be powerful and hence swift. The train will be able to run at a speed of 160 kmph wherever permitted,"  Bhakar added.

An engine at the rear side will also ensure the train can be pulled out of the station more easily and quickly and the platform will also not be occupied for a long time.

In another initiative, Indian Railways is now planning to implement the airline catering model in its system. A mini-meal facility will be available for passengers, this initiative is taken after the Railways adopted a stern policy of "if no bill, your food is free."  This model will also ensure that a better quality of food is served to the passengers.  This catering service will be be available in those trains whose catering facilities are under the control of IRCTC, like Shatabdi Express. 

This concept will be initially adopted on those routes where journey is of 5 to 6 hours. The services will be rolled out in the next 2-3 months. Under this catering facility, travellers will be served with high-quality food in extreme hygienic conditions, akin to those in airlines.
