Tamil Nadu Weather Update: RMC forecasts light to moderate rainfall for 6 districts, including Chennai
Tamil Nadu Rains: In Chennai, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across six Tamil Nadu districts on Wednesday.
The affected areas include Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram.
According to the RMC, the rainfall is due to a low-pressure system over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Bay of Bengal near the equatorial region. Above-average rainfall is anticipated across the state in the coming days.
Forecast models suggest Tamil Nadu will experience above-normal rainfall until January 16, with normal conditions expected from January 17 to January 23.
Chennai weather update
In Chennai, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures in the city are expected to range between 23°C and 27°C under a cloudy sky. Mild rain is likely in Chennai and nearby districts until January 16, driven by an upper air circulation. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Manjolai region, with light showers predicted along the coast from Chennai to the delta districts and Thoothukudi.
Further rainfall is anticipated from January 19 to January 21 due to another low-pressure system.
Tamil Nadu recorded 14 per cent excess rainfall during the northeast monsoon, with 447 mm compared to the seasonal average of 393 mm. Chennai received 845 mm, marking a 16 per cent increase, while Coimbatore saw a 47 per cent rise.
Cyclone Fengal, which impacted the state from November 29 to December 1, caused widespread destruction. It claimed 12 lives, inundated 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural land, and inflicted severe damage on infrastructure. The cyclone destroyed 1,649 km of electric conductors, 23,664 electric poles, 997 transformers, 9,576 km of roads, 1,847 culverts, and 417 tanks.
Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi districts reported over 50 cm of rainfall in a single day, equivalent to their seasonal average. The cyclone significantly impacted 69 lakh families and 1.5 crore individuals across the state.
