In a tough decision against the Central government, the Supreme Court on Thursday (March 21, 2024) put on hold Centre's notification on its Fact-Check Unit.

The government had issued a notification about its Fact-Check unit on Wednesday (March 20) itself.

The Apex court has given instructions to the BJP government to stop messages from developed India on WhatsApp.

Election Commission instructed Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) to stop such messages immediately. 

Centre on Wednesday notified the Fact-Check Unit under the Press Information Bureau to "address the challenge of fake news".

Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra and the Editors Guild of India had approached the Bombay High Court, asking it to stop the central government from notifying the Fact-Check Unit.
