Stock Markets Today: BSE Sensex, NSE Nifty open firm; NTPC, ITC, ICICI Bank among gainers

After closing negatively on Friday, the stock markets today gained some momentum and were up by over 0.5 per cent in the early morning trade. Both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 were trading in the green within minutes of the opening of the market. While the Sensex was trading at 38,066.51, up by over 189 points soon after the markets opened, the broader market NSE Nifty 50 was trading 11,241.15, up by over 62 points around this time.
In the 30 share BSE Sensex, 27 stocks were trading in the green in the early morning trade while the remaining 3 were trading in the red. The top gainers on Monday in the early trade were Larsen and Toubro (LT), NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, ITC and ICICI Bank while the top losers were Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel and Tata Steel.
Meanwhile, Larsen and Toubro, NTPC, Coal India and UPL were the top gainers on Nifty Fifty on Monday in the opening trade. The top losers were Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel and BPCL.
Today, the USDINR futures were trading at 74.9125 around against the USD at 9:25 am on BSE.
On Friday, the Sensex ended at 37,877.34, down by almost 433 points or 1.13 per cent while the Nifty 50 closed at 11,178.40, also down by over 122 points or 1.08 percent.
Asian shares dozed near recent highs in quiet trade on Monday as investors waited to see if the recent sell-off in longer-dated U.S. Treasuries would extend, and maybe take some pressure off the beleaguered dollar. MSCI`s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was 0.02 per cent lower at 562, but still eyeing the January top of 574.52. Japan`s Nikkei dipped 0.4 per cent after touching a six-month peak on Friday, as the country suffered its biggest economic contraction on record in the second quarter.

E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 firmed 0.25 per cent in early trade to be just below its record close of 3,386.15.
