The project cost of a second Metro corridor in south Mumbai, connecting Wadala with CST, will be around Rs 571 crore per km, according to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This is probably going to be the second-costliest Metro corridor being built in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and is going to be partially above the ground and partially underground.

The costliest Metro corridor in MMR is the fully underground Metro corridor between Colaba-Bandra-Seepz being built at Rs 689 crore per km, according to earlier estimates.

The second Metro corridor between Wadala and CST, measuring 14-km is an extension of Wadala-Thane Metro corridor that is being constructed. The extension of Metro-4 towards south Mumbai is known as Metro-11 for which detailed project report (DPR) is being finalised currently, MMRDA officials said.

Earlier in 2016, the construction cost of the 18.6-km-long Dahisar DN Nagar Metro-2A corridor being built on Link Road was estimated at Rs 344 crore per km, followed by Rs 376 crore per km for 16.5-km-long Dahisar East-Andheri East Metro-7 corridor.

Further, in 2018, the estimated project cost for several proposed elevated or above ground Metro corridors range between Rs 450 crore per km and Rs 500 crore per km, given yearly escalations and changes in prices of raw materials required for construction.

Also, estimated project costs generally tend to increase considering yearly cost escalations, price rise and also at times due to litigation or changes in laws.

According to MMRDA, the project cost of already operational 11.4-km-long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor is Rs 206 crore per km.

The Metro-11 corridor is being constructed as partly underground and above ground as the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has proposed the corridor to be constructed underground, passing through the MbPT area at the eastern waterfront. MMRDA also expects the cost to be borne by MMRDA for the same.
