The central government has prepared a plan to deal with the shortage of containers. The focus will be on bulk exports to tackle container shortage.

As per the information, the government is in talk with Ministry of Railways, Shipping and Road Transport, in order to reduce the turn-around time. Instruction has been given to Railways to use wagon instead of containers for freight.

Special arrangement for agri export:

Transport and Management Assistance Scheme (TMA) for the export of perishable agri products has been extended till March 31, 2022. The government is also considering giving financial assistance for agri exports.

Bulk export to tackle container shortage:

Spaces in ships will be used for export in order to ensure use of minimum containers. As per the information, plans are being made in order to make arrangements for export of goods like rice, sugar, cotton which can be imported directly.

Ministry officials, major ports, and shipping companies will also work to stop the unnecessary movement of containers.

Points under consideration:

The government is thinking of giving incentives to steel companies for making containers. Government is considering it under long term plan.

At present, the country manufactures very less containers. The government on September 20, announced that a 24-hour helpline will be started for the convenience of exports, in which a decision will be taken considering the seriousness of the issue.
