Sensex today: Despite volatility in the global market, Indian stock indices today opened higher, taking cues from their Asian peers. The market trend was led by power, metal and banking sector stocks. Vedanta, NTPC, PowerGrid, YES Bank, TATA Steel, constituents of BSE Sensex, gained substantially.

The 31-stock BSE index opened at 36,129.13 points, against Friday's close of 35,962.93 points. At 9.24 am, Sensex was trading 209.38 points or 58 percent up at 36,172.31 points.

Nifty too was trading higher at 10,854.55 points, 49.10  points at 9.36 am. On the NSE, majority of the Nifty 50 stocks surges. While 31 stocks of the 50 scrip index went up, 19 fell.

Bharti Airtel, Indiabulls Housing, Tata Motors were the laggards on the NSE. Among the sectoral indices, IT, Media and realty were in the red.

Over the past few week, Indian and global market have seen a lot of volatility. Indian stocks fell heavily in the past week over the election results. However, the market later recovered to some extent.
