Sensex, Nifty end flat; Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, Asian Paints among top gainers

Stock markets on Friday ended almost flat with the BSE Sensex ending the day at 31097.73 while the broader market NSE Nifty 50 closing at 9136.85. No major market movement was observed during the day’s trade. The Sensex which opened today above the Thursday mark by over 100 points, settled down by almost 25 points today.

Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 was also down by almost 6 points from the previous close on Thursday. 

The top gainers at the close on the BSE Sensex were Bharti Airtel, Asian Paint, Tata Steel, NTPC and Hindustan Unilever while the top losers were Mahindra & Mahindra, Axis Bank, Indusind Bank, Hero MotoCorp and Sun Pharmaceuticals. Around 30 per cent stock ended in green while the remaining ones in red.

Meanwhile, on the broader Nifty 50 index the top gainers at the time of opening were Vedanta Limited, BPCL, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints and Tata Steel. Top loser on Nifty-50 were Mahindra & Mahindra, Axis Bank, Bharti Infratel and UPL Limited.

Today, the rupee was trading at Rs 75.7225 per USD at around 3:45 pm.

Wall Street surged on Thursday as investors weighed the prospect of economic recovery against bellicose remarks from President Donald Trump regarding U.S.-China trade and a whistle blower`s dire warnings about the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic. In commodity markets, oil prices settled higher on Thursday after the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecast lower global stockpiles in the second half of 2020, although worries remain that a second surge in coronavirus infections could occur in coming months. Brent crude futures settled up USD 1.94, or 6.7 per cent, to  USD 31.13 a barrel.
