The Sensex on Wednesday closed 59.36 or 0.18% lower at 33,777.38 after hitting a fresh record high in early trade.
 
Top five Sensex gainers were ONGC (+1.48%), Wipro (+1.2%), L&T (+1.2%), HUL (+1.09%) and Infosys (+0.82%), while the major losers were Dr Reddy's (-1.82%), Bharti Airtel (-1.51%), NTPC (-1.22%), Tata Steel (-1.00%) and HDFC (-0.96%).
 
Shares of Reliance Communication closed 35.24% up at 17.27 after hitting a high of 18.51.
 
Shares of Maruti Suzuki touched an intra-day high of Rs 10,000 after opening at Rs 9,970 against the previous close of Rs 9,804.50. The company's market cap crossed Rs 3 trillion mark.
 
Among the BSE sectoral indices, realty index performed well and was up 3.01%, followed by metals 0.75 %.
 
Indiabulls Real Estate rose 5.83%, DLF was +4.72% up. Shares of HDIL rose +5.37%.
 
Domestic sentiment remained upbeat as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's victories in Modi's home state of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have raised hopes of continued reforms, boosting markets over the last four sessions.
 
Top gainers on the BSE, besides Reliance Communication, were Morepan Laboratories Ltd (+20%), S R G Securities Finance Ltd (+20%), Amrapali Capital and Finance Services Ltd, International Combuston (India) LTD (+19.99), among other stocks.
 
At close, 1581 stocks advanced, 1124 declined and 182 remained unchanged on the BSE.
