The Indian Railways’ Rs 1 lakh crore station redevelopment plans have attracted criticism from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). The auditor has said that the focus is mainly on improving passenger facilities and facade of stations and not on removing bottlenecks to ensure timely movement of trains. It said that timely movement of trains is the basic service to be provided by the national transporter, according to a PTI report. The CAG report said that the station modernisation plans should address infrastructural constraints.

There has been a significant increase in the number of trains handled per day in the 15 selected stations, however, the infrastructure were not augmented over a period of time, the CAG reportedly said. Infrastructure like platforms, washing pit lines and stabling lines at the stations were not augmented even as the number of trains on these stations increased over a period of time.

According to the report, 2,436 trains were handled by the selected 15 stations as of March 2017, and of these, 638 trains are being run with 24 or more coaches every day. Out of 164 platforms in these stations, 100 platforms have the capacity to handle trains with 24 or more coaches. Trains with higher number of coaches had to be handled on platforms of shorter lengths due to absence of adequate capacity of platforms.

This led to inconvenience to passengers in boarding and de-boarding trains, the report added.
