Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on June 7, said the Centre has decided to extend the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till Diwali in the wake of the second Covid-19 wave in the country. “That is, by November, free food grains will be available in fixed quantity every month to more than 80 crore people,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that last year, when the lockdown had to be imposed due to COVID, our country had arranged for free ration to more than 80 crore countrymen for 8 months under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
He further added that this year also the scheme was extended for May and June due to the second wave. Today the government has decided that the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will now be extended till Diwali. In this time of the pandemic, the government is standing by the poor with every need, as their partner.
“The purpose of this effort is that none of my poor brothers and sisters, their families, should go to bed hungry,” Modi said.
However, he did not reveal the expenditure that the Centre will incur in the current phase of the scheme.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, the Central Government started on March 26, 2020, keeping in mind the 21-day lockdown, so that the poor people do not face any problem. Later Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman started various types of schemes under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Kalyan Yojana.
For the successful implementation of the scheme, an amount of Rs 1.70 crore has been allocated last year by the government.
