Petrol prices at record high in Mumbai, breach Rs 91/litre mark

Diesel price also surged to costs Rs 79.72 per litre, Rs 0.32 up in Mumbai. Petrol and diesel prices, however, were at Rs 83.73 a litre and Rs 75.09 a litre, respectively, in Delhi today. The petrol price in the national capital was at Rs. 83.49 on Sunday.
Petrol prices in Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai were also 20 to 25 paise up. In Kolkata, Petrol price is at Rs 85.53 today against yesterday's Rs. 85.30. On the other hand, petrol price in Bengaluru was 25 paise up at Rs. 84.40 from the previous day's Rs 84.15. The petrol price in Chennai was at Rs. 87.05 from the previous day's Rs 86.80.
Petrol prices in Mumbai is the highest among the cities, while the price is much cheaper in Delhi due to lower value added tax (VAT). Notably, petroleum products are excluded from the GST list. According to an Indian Express report, the Maharashtra government levies 25 percent VAT on petrol in Mumbai, besides imposing surcharge of Rs 9 for a litre across the state. Petrol price in many districts of Maharashtra was above Rs 90 for the past few days.
For diesel, the VAT is 21 percent in Mumbai, with a surcharge of Rs 1 for a litre across the state. A litre of petrol was retailing above Rs 90 in many districts across Maharashtra for the past few days. Diesel prices in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata were Rs. 75.09, Rs. 79.72, and Rs. 76.94, respectively, against the previous day's Rs. 74.79 , Rs. 79.40 and Rs. 76.64, respectively.
The rise in price of petrol is due to increase in crude oil prices in the international market and also depreciating Indian rupee against dollar. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal and Rajasthan have cut down on levies.
