Posts related to fines and penalties for violating traffic rules have taken over the internet since September 1, the day a new Motor Vehicle Act was implemented. Many users have complained about the higher penalty they are having to pay. However, the Odisha Traffic Police had slapped a whopping Rs 6.53 lakh challan on a truck owner on August 10 as per old traffic rules, about 10 days before the new rules came into effect.

This could be one of the heftiest fines imposed on a traffic violator till date, where an owner of a truck was slapped with such a huge amount to by the Sambalpur Regional Transport Office (RTO) for various offenses. 

What is the case?

Though the incident happened on August 10, much before the implementation of the new Motor Vehicles Act, it came into light only on Saturday. The Nagaland registered truck was fined by the enforcement team of the transport office in Sambalpur when the department found the vehicle violated multiple traffic rules. Owner Shailesh Shankar Lal Gupta is a resident of Bethel Colony in Phek Town of Nagaland, while driver Dillip Karta happens to be a resident of Jharsuguda.

The driver of the truck was not carrying documents including vehicle insurance, violating air and noise pollution and carrying passengers on the goods vehicle. The RTO has levied the penalty on the driver and truck owner and issued a challan for driving without road tax, not carrying documents and violating permit conditions.

Earlier, a truck owner in Delhi was fined with a hefty challan of Rs 2 lakh and five hundred for violating traffic rules under the New Motor Vehicle Act. The traffic police officials found out during an inspection that he was not carrying his driving license and other documents related to the ownership of the truck.

There is huge list of cases with an abnormal amounts of fines to two-wheeler owners, car drivers or truck drivers. The amended Motor Vehicles Act was implemented on September 1 and as per new rules and there have been mixed reactions from the people so far with some in favour and some opposing such huge penalties.
