No onboard food facility for these flyers amid rising covid cases: Aviation Ministry

Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered the airline carriers to stop giving in-flight meals to curb the rising covid cases in the country. In the last 24 hours, India has reported over 1.5 lakh covid cases, of which Maharashtra being the epicenter and most affected state of all.  

According to Zee Media Correspondent Sameer Dixit, “On-board food menu won’t be provided in the flight meal to curb the spread of rising covid cases.” He adds, the order states that domestic flight whose travel time is less than two hours, no onboard food facility should be given.”

However, if the duration of travel is more than two hours then the meal given to the passengers would be packaged (pre-packed) be it water or food, Dixit says referring to the ministry’s order. 

Last year in May, the flight services were restored with strict covid protocols after some lockdown restrictions. This packaged food norm was brought back in the domestic flights in August last year.

The guidelines also mention that the cabin crew traveling in the domestic flight are supposed to wear gloves before serving packaged food and water to the passengers alongside other covid norms. 

Besides, the cutlery provided to the passengers to have the meal on domestic flights will also be disposable, which means will be only used once by each passenger. 

These new norms have been taken to restore the confidence of flyers amid the second wave of covid concerns in the country. The government has been taking measures to control the spread of covid infection and the aviation ministry’s order is one of the measures taken by the government, he said.
