The Reserve Bank of India will be rolling out new Rs 100 denomination notes soon. So, what is the reason RBI is coming up with this new Rs 100 note? Well, the new Rs 100 currency will have a long life and can't be destroyed (tear or cut) easily, RBI has claimed in its annual report.
The look of this new note will be similar to the current Rs 100 note. But it will have a special feature in it. And because of this special feature, it can be kept anyway.

RBI is in process of printing 1 billion Rs 100 notes. These notes will be varnish-coated for safety and durability. The Central Bank is currently running a field trial run, if successful then the Bank will launch new Rs 100 notes and will gradually remove the old Rs 100 notes.
About the varnish-coating of new Rs 100 note, RBI has mentioned on its yearly report. Varnish is used to coat wooden furniture to protect it from water, temperature, and insects. However, the Bank has not changed the colour of the note and decided to go with the same - Purple.
The Central government has already given a nod on this. State Finance Minister Anurag Thakur last year mentioned this in the Upper House. He mentioned that the Government has given a green signal to RBI to issue varnish-coated Rs 100 denomination notes.
Other Features:
Size: Similar to the old note
This will be of Gandhi series
Design: Same as the old note
Durability: Long-life compared to the old one
The current life of Rs 100 note now is 2.5-3 years, but varnish-coated new notes will last for at least 7 years.
However, the printing cost will increase. Now, the printing cost of 1000 notes of current Rs 100 stands at Rs 1,570, but the varnish-coated will cost 20X. Also, keeping the difficulties faced by the visually challenged, the new note will be blind-friendly.
