New currency notes are still not working in around 20 per cent of ticket vending machines (TVMs) installed at Delhi Metro stations, reports say. This is troubling the commuters a lot, especially during peak hours. There are 214 metro stations of Delhi Metro spread over a 294-kilometre network. The DMRC has removed ticket counters from around 100 stations. Tokens are distributed only in case of failure of the TVMs. The total number of TVMs installed at stations at present is 845.

According to a report published by Hindi Daily Hindustan today, around 20% old TVMs are not accepting new currency notes. The problem is being faced by people at several stations, including Civil Lines, Madipur, Rohini East, Rohini West, Kohat Enclave, Mundka, Dwarka Sector 12, Peeragarhi, Barakhambha, Adarsh Nagar, Vidhan Sabha and Nangloi.

The new currency notes are smaller in dimension than the old ones.

In July this year, Delhi Metro had accepted that some old TVMs were not recognising new currency notes. "We are facing some problems in the sense that old machines are not recognising new currencies and we are taking it up with the vendor," PTI had quoted DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh as saying. Singh had also said that the ticket vending machines were also not recognising damaged noted and the DMRC was trying to fix the problem. It seems the problem continues to persist even today with some of the TVMs of DMRC.

Meanwhile, DMRC is installing new vending machines at several stations.

Commuters can use new notes with the new vending machines. At several stations, there are old as well as new TVMs. New currency notes are accepted by the new machines. Many times, the vending machines don't accept a note if it is soiled or torn, or when there is no change in the machines. For this, the metro staff have been put on duty at some of the busiest stations of the Delhi Metro network to assist people. These metro staff keep change with themselves and help those needy They also help people in getting the token for a metro ride.

New currency notes were introduced after the demonetisation announcement in November 2016.
