Mumbai gets its costliest public toilet! Price will shock and awe you

Just a day before Gandhi Jayanti this year, the costliest public toilet is set to be opened at Marine Drive in Mumbai. This five-seat toilet has been constructed at a cost of Rs 94 lakh and is likely to be the costliest toilet in the city. This has been set up at the opposite of Air India ofiice along Marine Drive. This toilet would on vacuum tech and would require minimal water.

The toilet has been constructed under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme and it will be maintained and run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Besides the joggers and cyclists, this toilet would be of great help to the public as there was no public toilet till now from Princess Street to National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA).

Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner of A Ward, said that the toilet has received all permissions to function. At present, any construction along Marine Drive requires permission from a committee formed by the Bombay High Court. The committee members are from the police, civic body and the heritage committee, according to DNA.

Of the five seats in the toilet, two are for women. “This is the first vacuum toilet in the city and it will have solar panels on its roof,” said another civic official, as cited by DNA. He added that power generated from the solar panel will be used for the illuminating the structure.

Normally, the cost of a public toilet depends upon on the number of seats. “Every seat cost ranges from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh in public toilets,” said the official. But in the Marine Drive toilet, each seat cost around Rs 19 lakh.
