Mucormycosis is a fungal infection which is also known as black fungus and is being reported in Covid-19 patients who are recovering or have recovered. Mucormycosis is causing blindness or other serious health issues and even death in some cases.

As per the information, around 110 patients suffering from Mucormycosis are admitted in Civil Hospital Amdavad. While in Surat's Kiran Super Multispeciality Hospital, patients who have recovered from Covid-19 around 3 weeks earlier are found affected by Mucormycosis.

The symptoms of Mucormycosis or black fungus are:

  • Headache
  • Fever post recovering from Covid
  • Loss of vision or pain in the eyes
  • Facial Deformity
  • Facial pain
  • Nasal congestion

 

Treatment:

  • Get immediate biopsy done
  • Antifungal therapy
  • Consult your doctor or visit the nearest hospital
  • If the condition deteriorates get operated.

Dr VK Paul, a member of NITI Aayog has said that Mucormycosis is mainly found in people who have diabetes.

Dr Sanjay Dhawan, Director ophthalmology, Max Hospital, said that this disease can also be seen in patients who are not diabetic. This is mainly because of low immunity and if the level of sugar is more in the body due to diabetes or steroids then it provides an environment for this fungus to grow.
