Morbi Bridge Collapse: Over 3 lakh people dead in 10 years due to drowning, 147 bridges need immediate repair
In the last 10 years, more than 3 lakh people have lost their lives due to minor incidents of drowning.
Morbi Bridge Collapse: At least 141 people have lost their lives due to a cable bridge collapse in Gujarat's Morbi on Sunday night. However, Morbi is not just a solitary accident of its kind. In many such small and big accidents, thousands of people have died due to drowning.
According to the ADSI (Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India) report of 2021, about 36,362 people have lost their lives due to drowning last year alone. In the last 10 years, more than 3 lakh people have lost their lives due to drowning. During the same period, more than 20,000 citizens of India lost their lives due to the breakdown of the structure.
147 bridges to be repaired as per Ministry reported to Lok Sabha in 2018
The Ministry of Transport and Highways launched the Indian Bridge Management System (IBMS) in 2016 to investigate the condition of bridges. The survey revealed that 147 bridges in the country need immediate repair.
Over 3 lakh people died due to drowning
In the last 10 years, more than 3 lakh people have lost their lives due to minor incidents of drowning. 10 years ago in the year 2012, 27,558 people had died. At the same time, in the year 2021, 36,362 people have lost their lives. Year after year the number of deaths due to drowning has repeatedly increased. At the same time, over 20,000 people have died due to structural collapse of some sort.
Decrease in accidents of bridge breakdown
ADSI (Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India) reported that the accidents of the collapse of structures. In the last 10 years, 20,313 people have died due to the collapse of different types of structures. 1630 people died last year in this manner. At the same time, 10 years ago in 2012, 2,682 people lost their lives due to accidents and the collapse of structures of some kind.
In the year 2018, the Ministry of Transport and Highways had informed the Lok Sabha that a survey had found that out of a total of 1,66,236 bridges, 147 were identified as dangerous and in need of immediate repair.
