India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted normal monsoon in India. It is a government weather agency.
The weather company has predicted that there is a 98 percent chance of weather in the year 2022. Skymet in its preliminary forecast released on February 21, 2022, had already pegged the monsoon in 2022 as 'normal', and the same continues at present.
It denied the possibility of El Nio and said La Nina return has stalled.
The company expects less rain in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Apart from this, there is a possibility of less rain in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura as well. While normal rainfall is possible in Punjab, Haryana, UP, and MP, Skymet said.
“The last 2 monsoon seasons have been driven by back-to-back La Nina events. Earlier, La Nina had started shrinking sharply in winters, but its fallback has been stalled on account of the strengthening of trade winds," Yogesh Patil, Chief Executive Officer at Skymet said.
"Though passed its peak, La Nina cooling of the Pacific Ocean is likely to prevail till, short of the onset of southwest monsoon. Therefore, the occurrence of El Nino, which normally corrupts the monsoon is ruled out. However, pulsating behavior of the monsoon is expected to transpire abrupt and intense rains, interspersed by abnormally long dry spells,” the CEO of this Noida-based company said.
